Bocchi the Rock! reflected the reality of introverts, they say

It is evident that Bocchi the Rock! It was one of the most relevant series not only of the season Fall-2022 (October-December)but for the entire year 2022. So much so that, although CloverWorks is working on other projects, has confirmed the production of not one, but of two compilation films for the franchise that will hit theaters in Japan in spring 2024.

However, a post by Twitter user “@a_xwww5” went immensely viral because it attempted to analyze why the series became so popular. While some claim that it was the animation work of CloverWorks and the genius of the director Keiichirou Saitouthis user stated that the popularity of Bocchi the Rock! It derives from a connection of empathy that otakus developed towards the protagonist, Hitori Gotou.

Before explaining, here is what the user had to say about it:

  • «The fact that “Bocchi the Rock!” has become so popular makes it clear that, no matter how far otakus go with the expansion of their culture, they still have the desire for someone to take them out of their introversion and lead them towards an extraordinary life. In real life, I didn’t have a Nijika-chan who invited me to a band or a Kita-chan who invited me to do fun things.».

The main observation is that the popularity of the series suggests that, despite the spread of otaku culture, many followers still long to be inspired to overcome their introversion and live a more extraordinary life. Their comparison reflects the emotional connection that viewers can establish with the series’ characters and how their stories can resonate with personal desires and experiences.

And of course, the opinion was not without responses:

  • «There is an old expression about a “Prince Charming riding his horse,” and I think this applies not only to otakus but to anyone who is an introvert.».
  • «But even Justin Bieber wouldn’t have been discovered by Usher and his astute manager Scooter Braun if he hadn’t posted videos of him singing on the Internet when he was just a teenager.».
  • «When I was in college, there were a lot of lonely students who ended up forming a band with that exact name. Even social stragglers can find each other and form their groups».
  • «I’m shy, I’m not good at talking to people. But if someone talks to me, I am a very charismatic person. I really feel identified».
  • «Just as there are people who don’t believe that an anime about a guy who falls in love with many beautiful girls without making the slightest effort, I believe that there are no people who think that Bocchi the Rock! reflects a realistic band experience».
  • «There are laggards who really try to converse with others, but due to the difference in tastes and poor compatibility, they end up giving up.».
  • «I think it is a very painful reality, and the only thing social networks have achieved is to increase the distance between social groups.».
