In November-2024 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the list of feature films that were eligible to compete in the Best Animated Film. Among the 31 titles selected for this category, four Japanese anime productions stood out that had captured the attention of the international public.
This list included: “The Colors Within” of Science SARU; “Ghost Cat Anzu” of Shin-Ei Animation and Miyu Productions; “The Imaginary” of Studio Ponoc; and “Look Back” of Studio Durian. Unfortunately, None of these four productions managed to make it into the final selection of nominees.since this morning the final list that excluded all these films was revealed.
Evidently the consideration list has included anime films for some years now and, in fact, Studio Ghibli's “The Boy and the Heron” won the award last year. Taking into account the above, fans hopedconsidering the worldwide popularity it quickly achieved, the film adaptation of “Look Back” made it to the final selection.
Unfortunately, that did not happen, and the list of nominees for the Oscar Award for Best Animated Film was as follows:
- “flow” (Dream Well Studio, Sacrebleu Productions, Take Five); “Inside Out 2” (Pixar Animation Studios); “Memoir of a Snail” (Arenamedia, Snails Pace Films); “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” (Aardman Animations); “The Wild Robot” (DreamWorks Animation).
However, it is not all bad news. It turns out that “Amedama (Magic Candies)”, a production by Toei Animation, Daisuke Nishio and Takashi Washio, did get the prestigious nomination, but in the category of Best Animated Short Film. He will be competing against the titles “Beautiful Men”; “In the Shadow of the Cypress”; “Wander to Wonder”; and “Yuck!”, to get the precious statuette in the ceremony that will take place on March 2.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been plagued by many controversies when it comes to the Best Animated Feature category.but they do not go beyond rumors such as those that claim that Disney buys its nominations or that films that promote the LGBT+ agenda have priority within the selection. In fact, the latter is a reality, but it does not apply to this category, but to Best Picture.
The new rules of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, announced in September 2020, require that “minimum diversity standards” be met to be eligible for the gala's top award. Any aspiring film must meet two of four categories that favor underrepresented ethnic groups, either through what they show on screen or through their production, advertising, marketing or distribution teams.
