Japanese criticize the decline of isekai

The anime industry has once again led a debate on Japanese forums after Internet users will begin to debate about why recycled ideas within fantasy stories continue to exist. isekai. From concepts like “in another world“, “reincarnated as” either “I am the strongest from the beginning“, the Japanese did not take long to reflect on the abundance of repetitive titles and clichés in the genre that, in some way, continue to be produced wholesale.

Isekai

Obviously there was a division of opinion, on the one hand some argued that although the titles may sound similar, each series has its own world-building, with characters and plots that manage to distinguish themselves from the others. Furthermore, they affirm that these titles serve to not deceive the viewer, that is, from the beginning one knows what they will see: epic adventures, powerful protagonists and magical worlds.

But others were definitely more critical, pointing out that this over-exploitation reflects the obvious lack of creativity in the industry. Like a cancer that does not stop multiplying in the face of an industry that has no interest in getting rid of it, the isekai genre has become so saturated with stories of reincarnations, parallel worlds and invincible protagonists, that no anime in this category has a relevant impact.making new releases feel increasingly repetitive and predictable.

But let’s stop with presentations and see what the Japanese otakus said about it:

  • «Is it fun to see things so similar?».
  • «The same thing happens with the stories of reincarnated as the villain‘».
  • «Is this something recent?».
  • «If you can’t anticipate the content, you are disappointed if it turns out to be different from what you expected.».
  • «I’ve been saying ‘enough, I’m tired of this’ for more than ten years, but privileged children continue to produce the same thing through unfair competition.».
  • «‘Solo Leveling’ is fun».
  • «There are also the stories of villains, the exiles of the hero’s group and the villains in games».
  • «If the title includes words like ‘Isekai’, ‘Reincarnation’, ‘Party’ or ‘Villainess’, I just ignore it».
  • «Those ‘You gain skills by doing X’ stories are too low in difficulty.».
  • «Obsessed haters who criticize these things are more annoying».
  • «They are not ashamed to continue making things as if they were Dragon Quest fanfiction».
  • «The ‘unvalued skill evaluator who turns out to be the strongest’… but it was all thanks to the world tree».
  • «It’s not just a thing about ‘Narou’ light novels. Even in Jump we are seeing the same thing. ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ is a patchwork of past works, without originality. Well, although that vague ending was a bit unique, I think».
  • «It’s terrifying when the protagonist, portrayed as a good person, turns out to be a complete evil one. Like the one that said: ‘Although that person is still good, he will commit a crime, so killing him first is an act of kindness.’ That author is scary».
  • «Do you identify with these stories in real life? It’s like a masturbatory fantasy».
  • «What would be the origin of this type of stories? ‘Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken’?».
  • «It’s hard to pin down because tastes have gradually changed, but probably the pioneer was ‘Zero no Tsukaima’. Although ‘Zero no Tsukaima’ fans might be bothered by me saying this».
  • «The authors know it too. But if they don’t use titles like that, they don’t sell.».
  • «In that case, the readers are to blame».
  • «The ‘they exiled me’ stories are depressing to watch. They give a very loser vibe».
  • «This season, the anime of uncle reincarnated as a noble villain is fun».
  • «In the case of web novels, there is literally nothing other than this».
  • «They give too many powers to the reincarnated characters».
  • «Most of these authors have no real life experience. They write ‘I am the strongest’ light novels out of pure narrative convenience because if they set the stories in the modern world, they wouldn’t know what to write.».
  • «The voice actors probably do them mechanically, since participating in these animes does not contribute to their careers».
  • «Hitler said it is better to make things easy for fools to understand.».
  • «I can’t stand those screens where character states are shown».
  • «It’s like eating food that you criticize saying it tastes bad, but you continue eating it.».
  • «Because the content is similar, they use eccentric titles to grab readers’ attention.».
  • «Lately they don’t even make an effort to invent something like a fictional European world. Everything is set in the modern world with dungeons or Vtuber-style things».
