Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches turns 9 without a sequel

It’s already April 12 in Japan, which means that the anime adaptation of the manga written and illustrated by Miki YoshikawaYamada-kun and the Seven Witches (Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo)”, is celebrating its ninth anniversary. Although nine years have passed since the premiere of this series, the production of a second season has not been announced.

Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches

The series was an overall good adaptation of the original manga, covering around 90 chapters in a total of twelve episodes. Needless to say, there was a lot of content omitted, for reasons of practicality when transferring the story to animation. However, 90 chapters are barely a third of the original work, which ended in February 2017, almost two years after the conclusion of the anime.

It is important to mention that “Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches” is easily one of the most popular romantic comedies in the industry, so many cannot explain why it has not been decided to produce a sequel. One of the most obvious reasons, however, is the fact that the original manga is already finished. Anime adaptations are generally made to promote sales of the original work, so it would make no sense to continue with the adaptation at this point.

Although recently there have been several cases of manga series that get adapted into anime even after having ended., it should be noted that these are “first seasons” and not “sequels”, since the latter cases have been quite few. Furthermore, author Miki Yoshikawa has already moved on to her new franchise that achieved even better success, “Kakkou no Iinazuke (A Couple of Cuckoos)”, and which is also waiting for the announcement of a sequel.

In the end, the anime industry is full of surprises and at any moment we could see the return of “Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches” to television. Nine years of waiting is nothing at this point!
