Re:ZERO fans upset by censorship of lolis

The long-awaited return of “Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World” to television has excited more than one, but it has definitely not been able to evade controversies. Although fans are relieved that the studios WHITE FOX were able to remain in charge of this project despite their financial difficulties and having lost many key production members, they definitely had to change some things to make this possible.

This includes the change of director Masaharu Watanabe and the character designer Kyuuta Sakaito Masahiro Shinohara and Haruka Sagawa, respectively. Many have especially noticed the second change, since the character designs are certainly completely different from what was seen in the second season (as we already reported in our article “Re:ZERO fans happy with Emilia’s ‘new breasts’“).

However, fans of the original work knew that this third season would have a certain degree of censorship due to two characters that could bring criticism from viewers. Is about Liliana Masqueradetroubadour traveler, and Capella Emerada Lugunicathe Archbishop of Lust of the Witch Cult.

  • In the case of Liliana Masquerade, she is a small, dark-skinned woman with bright yellow hair tied in two tails and large round eyes of the same color. She wears revealing clothing, an orange cape, and decorates her hair and body with decorations such as nuts and animal bones. (Original design on the left, anime design on the right)
Re:ZERO
  • In the case of Capella Emerada Lugunica, she has short golden hair, with a lock on the right and a rose at the end. She wears revealing clothes, shorts, leggings, a bikini and nothing else. (Original design on the left, anime design on the right)
Re:ZERO

Looking at the original designs, it is certainly understandable that they had to be modified so that Internet users would not try to “cancel” the series. And of course, this whole situation did not go without comments:

  • «Sincerely? I really appreciate the fidelity to the Re:ZERO light novel designs, so I would have preferred them not to be modified, but honestly, these designs are really cute, and will be more noticeable to the general Western audience, so 0 complaints for my».
  • «This kind of thing only leads to more series being censored in the future.».
  • «The Western public in general still does not consume this type of series. So you have alienated the people who were already going to consume it in favor of an audience that was never going to consume it.».
  • «Sorry to all the erotic loli fans, but the redesigns are cuter and I’m more interested in the fact that Emilia has bigger breasts now».
  • «Liliana’s design change is impressive. It makes the overall design of it more pleasing to the eye. Capella’s not so much. It really made sense that she was almost naked. One step more, two steps back in Re:ZERO».
  • «These redesigns are horrible».
  • «I sincerely hope that it is just a good ploy to get fans to buy the Blu-rays and not because they think “it is what is best for the public.”».
  • «The fear of production companies of people on Twitter is a reality».
  • «I like Liliana’s change, but Capella’s doesn’t convince me. It looks great, but she is literally the archbishop of lust; I don’t think the fact that she’s wearing a skimpy bikini will attract the ire of anyone who actually cares about the content.».
  • «How sad, I was really hoping to see these sexy designs faithfully animated».
  • «Well, they maintain the design and theme, although they lower the level of exaggerated sensuality quite a bit. While Capella looks better in the light novel, but that must be because she had a lot more details there.».
  • «Damn, the original Re:ZERO light novel designs were so much better».
  • «The better the best girl, Emilia, doesn’t have her breasts nerfed, the better.».
  • «Liliana is completely fine, she still feels like herself and it’s just clothes. Capella doesn’t really make sense, she is literally the representation of lust, isn’t that the whole point of her character».
  • «I don’t know who these people are, but having seen censored costumes created for certain demos in other games/media, it’s not a big deal. It doesn’t take anything away from his character or his overall appearance.».
  • «I see they’ve also made Lilianna’s clothes NOT see-through. A very welcome change for me. I have no problem with the old design of it. I don’t think it’s “problematic” or anything like that, but I also prefer this new design».
  • «I don’t agree with any form of censorship, but I can understand it with Liliana. However, I can’t understand it with Capella since she is figuratively holding the sin of lust and the title of her as well. Skimpy clothing makes sense for such a character».
  • «Sad, but expected, also, I wonder if the version of Capella’s shorts are even bigger than in that first teaser they gave us for the animation».
  • «Child characters don’t wear skimpy bikinis. Instead, they wear (even swimsuits) slightly less revealing clothing. Oh no, the character is ruined. It’s not like the clothes made her whole character. Damn sick otakus».
  • «Oh no, they’re not going to make characters that look like girls dress like strippers. Clearly, this is the worst that can happen. It’s like when one of the edges of my toast was slightly burnt».
