Now they say that Shingeki no Kyojin is ‘sexist’

It’s been a while since the completion of the manga written and illustrated by Hajime IsayamaShingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)”, and to this day he remains one of the greatest exponents of shonen. Although there are divided opinions about the ending of the story, there is no doubt that the merits of this franchise are countless, and It has gone down in history as one of the best mangas of the time.

However, just because it is considered one of the best does not mean that it is “perfect”, and It seems that in a comment forum the work once again became a topic of discussion due to a curious panel which was presented as “sexist”. It all started when a user pointed out that some think that “Hajime Isayama is a feminist”:

  • «I saw an opinion that the reason there are no elements of misogyny in “Shingeki no Kyojin” is because Hajime Isayama is studying feminism, but I don’t think he is studying that at all. I don’t think he has any interest in feminism. The reason why there are no erotic elements in the women in the work of the march is because the author is a realist».

And continued:

  • «In reality there are no female soldiers who fight with their thighs and cleavage visible. The moment you put something like that, the work loses its realism. Isayama knew it, and that’s why he didn’t do it. As for characterization, I think trying to portray male and female characters equally as human beings has resulted in an absence of misogyny.».

And he concluded:

  • «A man who respects his partner as a human being does not need to study feminism. It is those men who, as soon as they find a partner, have some kind of strange filter that makes them see her only as a woman before seeing her as a human being, who need to study feminism.».

Although their comments were full of praise for the author and applauding the “perfection” of Shingeki no Kyojin in every possible aspect, the responses did not take long to arrive and one of them ended up exposing a scene from “Chapter 54: Location of the Counterattack“, where where a small Historia appears with Frieda Reiss who explains “how to be a woman”pointing to the page of a book that shows Ymir:

  • «I myself did not give importance to the fact that the female characters in the series did not have large or poorly exposed breasts, but when I read the scene in Chapter 54 of the original work in which Frieda explains to Historia what it means to “be a woman,” Using the slave Ymir as a reference, my hair stood on end.».
  • «I really like Hajime Isayama, who says “to be a woman is to be a slave” in the work, and as soon as I read this I thought that this person was more than just a feminist».

Of course, all this is said according to the context of the story, but it was enough for the topic to set social networks on fire in no time:

  • «Well I think they have a point».
  • «After all, manga artists think in line with the times they live in, which is why they become successful.».
  • «Masculinity is having courage and femininity is being a slave, I don’t know what to think».
  • «When a character in a manga says something, is it the author’s ideas?».
  • «Current education still indicates that women are slaves of the home».
  • «The woman is a slave who gives birth to offspring, that is what the story tries to criticize. So is Isayama a feminist?».
  • «The fact that the girl shown in the book was a slave was not known until much later.».
  • «Frieda and Historia have this conversation without knowing the truth about Ymir’s past. It is a very strange perspective from which this criticism is made.».
  • «In the second half, Shingeki no Kyojin becomes more political. It’s not Isayama, it’s simply because of the times when the manga was being published».
  • «Those who read something in a manga and think that this is how the author thinks, I think they have a problem.».
  • «They are altering things a lot just for their own conviction. And it’s the same as saying that Isayama is a feminist just because the girls in her work don’t have big tits, both of which are stupid arguments.».
  • «Well, I think the girls in Shingeki no Kyojin are that ugly for the simple fact that Isayama doesn’t know how to draw.».
  • «In conclusion, it is not a perfect manga. Isayama would have done well to write the story and let someone else do the drawing, perhaps he would have done it better that way.».
  • «This is an example of the type of fans who read Shingeki no Kyojin, most of them have zero reading comprehension.».
