Toei Animation also bets on girl bands with Girls Band Cry


On the official site for the studios’ next original anime Toei Animation, Girls Band Cry, a new promotional video for the project was revealed. The press release also confirmed that the premiere has been scheduled for the season of Spring-2024 (April-June).

Additionally, the project’s musical band, Togenashi Togeariwill perform their first live concert on March 16, 2024 at the facilities of the 1000 CLUB in Kanagawa/Yokohamatitled “TWILIGHT PRELUDE“. Tickets are now available for immediate reservation in Japan.

  • Mirei as Subaru Awa, a mature and strong-willed performing arts student.
  • Yuri like Momoka Kawaragi, a free-spirited 20-year-old street musician.
  • Rina Uchiyama like Nina Iseri, an introverted girl who is good at blending in.
  • natsu like Tomo Ebizuka, heiress to a rich family, but now alone in a shared apartment.
  • Syuri like Rupa, born to a South Asian father and Japanese mother, and gifted at acting.

Production team

  • Kazuo Sakai (LoveLive! Sunshine!!, Mushi-Uta) is in charge of directing the anime at the studios Toei Animation.
  • Jukki Hanada (Steins;Gate, No Game No Life, Nanatsu no Taizai, Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!) is in charge of writing and supervising the scripts.
  • Nari Teshima (Tenkyuu, Suisei wa Yoru wo Mataide) is in charge of character design and animation direction.
  • Mari Kondou and Jae Hoon Jung is in charge of CGI animation direction.
  • Kenji Tamai (agehasprings, Sing “Yesterday” for Me, Samurai Flamenco) is in charge of composing the soundtrack.

Synopsis of Girls Band Cry

The protagonist drops out of high school in the second year and aspires to enter university while working alone in Tokyo. A girl is betrayed by her friends and she doesn’t know what to do. Another girl is abandoned by her parents, and tries to survive in the city by doing part-time jobs. This world disappoints us all the time. Nothing goes as planned. But we want something that we still like. We believe there is a place where we belong. That’s why we sing.
