More sites take a stand against AI illustrations

This morning, the popular platform PIXIV FANBOX issued a press release informing that they have decided to offer a definition of the “Illustrations generated by artificial intelligence (AI)” and, categorically, ban them from the site. In addition, in the statement it was reported that actions such as using PIXIV FANBOX services in a deceptive way, such as to redirect users to external sites where the publication of images produced by this technology is allowed or raise funds with little or no activity on PIXIV FANBOX, have been on the rise in recent months.

AI

Let’s remember that PIXIV FANBOX had declared a “temporary suspension” of the permission to upload illustrations generated by AI to its platform on May 10, while they reviewed the situation to issue a definitive statement. On the other hand, PIXIV FANBOX can be defined as the “Patreon of Illustrators”, since users can subscribe to an artist to have access to their content, paying a monthly fee established by the illustrator himself. However, the proliferation of AIs that generate illustrations had led to “anyone calling themselves an artist” and uploading mass-generated content to this platform, making easy money.

But to ban a type of content, you must first define it. This is what PIXIV FANBOX prepared for this statement, since it indicated that, for the purposes of this prohibition, “artwork generated by AI” is defined as any content generated by artificial intelligence (or any similar technology), either in whole or in part, or content that has been generated by an AI and edited by a person to pass off as their own work. Those who try to earn money on PIXIV FANBOX with this type of content will be immediately suspended from the platform.

However, it is important to note that the use of tools such as automatic coloring of a human-made base illustration does not result in an AI-generated illustration. The fact of translating texts with the support of an AI or any content that parodies this type of publication is also not considered in this category. All these directives will enter into force as of July 25, and it is already attracting criticism from those affected.

Let’s review the comments:

  • «Finally, after all the criticism that came from foreigners».
  • «AI artists should use platforms dedicated to AI illustrations, otherwise it is unfair competition».
  • «There are a ton of sites dedicated to AI illustrations, but no joke they have even 1 percent of the traffic that PIXIV FANBOX does. That’s why AI artists insist on posting their content here».
  • «The AI artists were too conceited, did they really think real artists weren’t going to protest that they were making easy money?».
  • «If you can’t make money from it, it will be a technology that will die out naturally. Other than that, it is important to be able to suppress it effectively.».
  • «Well, if you want AI illustrations, then make your own. It’s not hard, you’re just lazy».
  • «I personally find the AI illustrations bland and all the same».
  • «I don’t understand, how will they identify that a user is uploading AI-generated artwork? Will they simply be based on user reports?».
  • «Well in South Korea they are still welcoming AI artists with open arms, they never had any real talent after all».
  • «I seriously think otaku drawing should now be left to AIs. The most common content there are busty women, and otakus masturbate to any content that shows big boobs, they are not demanding at all».
  • «Whichever way you look at it, this is sabotage by China and South Korea. In fact, Korean illustration sites are full of AI-generated images.».
