This morning an official Twitter account was inaugurated for Black Catthe multimedia franchise based on the manga written and illustrated by Kentaro Yabukithe author of To LOVE-Ru and Ayakashi Triangle. This was an extremely unexpected surprise, considering that the manga ended its publication every twenty years ago, and the anime adaptation only had one season about eighteen years ago. So what is the goal of this Twitter account? Is there an important announcement at the door?
Of course, the first theory that arose among fans was that the anime adaptation will have a remake. This might make sense, considering that the anime adaptation didn’t cover the entirety of the original manga, even though it aired a couple of years after the end of the work. However, there are also many theories against it, especially those based on the fact that Black Cat was, in fact, not very popular in its time.
Black Cat has many of the features of other popular Weekly Shonen Jump manga that should have guaranteed its success. There’s a likable and likable protagonist, a group of characters that give off a strong resemblance to found family, and a group of equally likable villains who frequently take on the heroes. However, the fact that it drew so much on the same topics as other titles in its genre could have been what doomed its popularity. While not entirely generic, fans familiar with the demographic can identify all of the character archetypes and plot moments before they even happen, making the story somewhat predictable.
It also didn’t help that the anime adaptation wasn’t the best it could be. Black Cat’s story was needlessly rewritten, while the passable animation hasn’t aged well past the mid-2000s. Although the voice acting and soundtrack were a good fit for the series and its characters, in the end they weren’t enough for Black Cat to get past the idea that it was fun but forgettable. The final story arc, in particular, left fans scratching their heads; not only was it completely original to the anime, but it ended up altering previous aspects of the story. Many viewers agreed that it was unnecessary. The manga had already ended, so there was no need to create an original ending.
With the participation of its creator, Kentaro Yabukiin the series To LOVE-Rumuch more successful, and his work in the series Ayakashi Triangle (which also received an anime adaptation in early 2023), it is unlikely that the manga Black Cat see the light again The idea of Yabuki delving into a similar shonen series also seems unlikely, as his focus has now shifted to more fanservice-type manga. That being said, a possible Black Cat anime remake isn’t completely off the table, provided there’s enough demand and interest from fans.
