On more than one occasion we have commented that Blu-ray/DVD sales are no longer a determining factor for the production of a second season of an animebut they are still a direct source of income for animation studios in Japan, as well as a way for fans to directly support a production.
Typically, these Blu-ray/DVD packs include physical benefits like printed artwork, but also previously unseen material like interviews with the production staff or voice cast. However, the main attraction of these physical packages is that the anime is presented “without any filters or censorship”since it is no longer being broadcast on television, but is being sold directly to the consumer.
The promise of “no censorship” is attractive especially when it comes to series of the ecchi genre., where we have shots of naked girls, wholesale breasts and buttocks that, in general, appear totally censored on television. And that was precisely what anime fans expected. Megami no Café Terrace (The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses) when they went to their favorite store to buy the first Blu-ray/DVD package.
But when they played the album on their device of choice, they were in for a bitter surprise: It’s exactly the same version that was broadcast on TV! This is exactly how the Twitter user reported it “@g6xa3awstGCEljS“, who buys most of the Blu-ray/DVDs of each season just to warn his fans if they are worth buying.
The user shared two screenshots comparing the version broadcast on television (and obviously also on streaming platforms) and the one included in the Blu-ray/DVD packagesjust to confirm that it is the exact same version with redaction:
And of course, all this disappointment could not go unnoticed:
- «And with that they want to bail out the damn Blu-ray/DVD industry? It really is that the studies are increasingly inept».
- «But hey, how do you think that this would be a good idea?».
- «If they don’t have an approval to uncensor even on the physical packages, what the hell is the point of adapting an ecchi manga like Megami no Café Terrace? I really don’t understand this industry».
- «This is considered a complete scam, it is a pity that once you open the package you can never return it».
- «No wonder it’s Tezuka Productions, a declining studio that has to take this kind of suggestive series to become relevant during the year.».
- «It’s disappointing, but Tezuka Productions had already disappointed enough with the series even being censored, so I understand.».
