Director Hiroshi Kobayashi accompanied this revelation with a special message to fans included in the Blu-ray content. This confirmation puts an end to the ambiguity surrounding Suletta and Miorine’s relationship. Initially, the anime left their marital status undefined, leading to speculation and discussion among fans. The cast and crew, along with hints in the story, had emphasized the romantic aspects of their relationship, as both characters referred to each other as their ‘girlfriends’ at different times.

However, the situation took a turn when A supposed confirmation in an issue of Monthly Gundam Ace magazine a few months ago was corrected shortly thereafter., accompanied by an apology from Bandai Namco for a “mistake.” This generated frustration and criticism from both Japanese and international fans, who They perceived it as a case of censorship of homosexual/lesbian characters on television.

The recent Blu-ray release has now clarified the narrative, reinstating Suletta and Miorine’s marriage into the story. “Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury” holds significance as the first Gundam subfranchise with a female protagonist in a clearly depicted same-sex relationship, marking its relevance among audiences. The series has attracted attention not only for its spectacular animation and story, but also for addressing social issues.

  • Blu-ray changes also add a ring on Miorine Rembran’s ring fingerwhich curiously was not present in the television version.

Yoshiyuki Tominothe original creator of Gundam, reflecting on the influence of his creation, emphasized its historical importance along with the works of Hayao Miyazaki. However, Tomino expressed concern about the series’ core themes diminishing over time and predicted a decline in the anime’s overall quality, suggesting that future iconic series might be rare.
