During a presentation addressed to investors, the commercial director of CD Project, Michael Nowakowskihinted at the possibility of future collaborations with animation studios TRIGGER. This Tokyo-based company was responsible for the animation of “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” last year, a production that became a streaming hit on Netflix and that contributed to the increase in sales of Cyberpunk 2077.
Nowakowski shared that CD Projekt has big plans to expand the franchise beyond the development of the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, known as “Project Orion.” This includes a live-action project based on the Cyberpunk 2077 universe that is in the early stages of development. During a question and answer session following the presentation, Nowakowski was asked to provide more details about CD Projekt plans to expand the franchise beyond video games, considering the success of “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.”
“Yes, we have plans. That’s why we have started collaborating with Anonymous Content on the live-action project. We want things to happen“Nowakowski said. “There is a lot happening, there are many plans. Trigger was involved in 2018, but ‘Edgerunners’ started in 2022, so for several years we didn’t talk about this because it wasn’t ready. We have plans that we prefer to keep secret until there is something concrete to discuss“.
Lead creative director Adam Badowski added: “It is also important to mention that TRIGGER, our partner, has certain policies for announcing projects and we must comply with them“. If CD Projekt is working on another Cyberpunk project in collaboration with TRIGGER, it may not be additional content for “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.” In an interview with Famitsu in October last year, Satoru Honma, producer of the anime and manager of CD Projekt Red in Japan, stated that there were no plans to continue the story.
“Personally, I would like to continue collaborating with Japanese studios to create more anime in the future, partly due to the excellent reception we’ve had“he commented. “However, to be clear, ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ was conceived as a standalone project, so there’s no ‘we’re secretly working on a second season’ possibility. Even if we make more anime in the future, I don’t know if it would be a second season or something completely different“.
In other news presented during the same session, CD Projekt CEO, Adam Kicińskiannounced that Cyberpunk 2077 has exceeded 25 million copies sold since its launch in December 2020, meaning it is selling “much faster” than The Witcher 3 after its launch. The financial director, Piotr Nielubowiczrevealed that the “Phantom Liberty” expansion sold three million copies in its first week of availability.
