It's probably not a surprise to anyone, but the anime adaptation of “Sakamoto Days” has debuted at the top of Netflix's international catalog. With only two episodes aired, the success of the retired assassin turned convenience store owner has been explosive, making it clear that his popularity was not to be underestimated.
Since its premiere, the “Sakamoto Days” anime has accumulated 8.6 million views, placing it as the second most viewed non-English-speaking television program on Netflix. In fact, it was only surpassed by the television monster that is “Squid Game” with its second season. Looking at the figures from another perspective, it means that the streaming platform's subscribers have dedicated 7.7 million hours to following the adventures of Taro Sakamoto.
As happened with “Dandadan”, another of the anime series distributed by Netflix, fans had to wait several years to see the manga story adapted to animation. The work currently has almost 200 chapters, so if popularity remains at these levels, it is more than likely that Netflix will order a continuation.
Meanwhile, the streaming platform has continued its successes with live-action projects such as “One Piece” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender”, so some suggest that “Sakamoto Days” could be one of the proposals for this type of projects. After all, the premise fits perfectly into a setting played by real actors, but will it be Japan or Netflix that takes the lead?
For its part, Yuuto Suzuki The publication of the manga began through the magazine Weekly Shonen Jump from the publisher Shueisha in November 2020 and is still in serialization. The anime adaptation produced by the studios TMS Entertainment is currently airing and will be broadcast in two separate parts, one in Winter-2025 (January-March) and another in Summer-2025 (July-September).
