Jujutsu Kaisen is the most popular anime in the world

The anime “Jujutsu Kaisen” has been officially recognized as the most in-demand animated television program in the world on the official Guinness World Records sitesnatching the title of “Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan), which has held it since 2020. According to data science firm Parrot Analytics, “Jujutsu Kaisen” has a global demand rating 71.2 times higher than that of an average television show.

Parrot Analytics calculates ‘demand’ based on how much attention, engagement, desire and viewership consumers express for the content. Its system captures billions of new data points every day, including video consumption (streaming and downloads), social engagement (hashtags, likes, shares), and research actions (for example, reading about a show on IMDb). Actions that require more effort on the part of the consumer, such as watching or downloading a program, are weighted more when calculating demand.

Based on the manga series of the same name by Gege Akutami, “Jujutsu Kaisen” follows the story of student Yuji Itadori, who joins a group of Jujutsu Sorcerers to defeat Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses, of which Yuji becomes the host. The anime overtook close competitors like “One Piece” and “Shingeki no Kyojin” to claim first place in the 2023 rankings. “One Piece” enjoyed a surge in interest due to the release of Netflix’s live-action adaptation, which brought new fans to the series and inspired older fans to rewatch previous episodes. “Shingeki no Kyojin,” which concluded its final season in November, remained immensely popular but narrowly lost this time.

Finally, it was a year-end surge that put “Jujutsu Kaisen” in the lead. New episodes of the second season were released in July and continued until the end of the year, with demand for the show increasing during this time. It peaked on December 29 with 128 times the average program demand. With Generation Z (ages 13-22) comprising 71.3% of viewers, “Jujutsu Kaisen” resonated with a younger audience than both “One Piece” (56.7% of Generation Z) and Attack on Titan (64.4 %). This enthusiastic fan base ultimately helped lead the anime to be the most popular of the year.
