Censorship of lolis in Japan worsens

The doujinshi sales platform DLsite caused a stir recently by announcing that a series of semi-regular search terms would be “watered down” to appease credit card companies upset with being associated with such terms. However, not even a day passed before some terms related to “lolis” were modified even further.

Lolis

The platform did not explain whether the credit card companies had rejected the proposed terms or if this was simply a precautionary measure. because the new terms had gained too much attention to continue being considered “secret,” with all the commotion on social media.

Affected terms include “loli,” which has now been changed to “tsurupeta (flat girl/つるぺた)”which in turn affects variations like “old loli” (loli-babaa/つるぺたババア), which is now “old flat.” Presumably, due to the comments generated on social media, the replacement term for “bestiality” has been changed to “Animal H.” to prevent minors from accidentally encountering graphic images.

Of course, there is no truly correct answer to these proposed new terms, since Now some people have commented that “flat old woman” is nothing more than an insult, with people joking that characters like Frieren would now fit into the description. There is also the problem that flat or small characters are not necessarily lolis, which this change does not help.

The controversy generated by these changes reflects the complexities and sensitivities around the representation of certain topics in the digital space, especially those related to otaku culture and the boundaries between fantasy and reality. DLsite and other similar platforms face the challenge of balancing freedom of expression with keeping large banking corporations happy.

Discussion over these changes is sure to continue, as the online community continues to debate the appropriateness and implications of these modifications:

  • «As simple as banning MasterCard from Japan and the whole problem is solved».
  • «Just use JCB based in Japan. In fact, there are many places in Japan, such as “home health” agencies, where they simply decline all foreign-issued credit cards. Problem solved».
  • «There has to be a legal basis that prevents these companies from imposing censorship on other people’s sites by threatening to withdraw their services. Even more so when it’s clearly racist towards Japanese culture, because they’re obviously targeting anime above all else».
  • «The Japanese have to grow their balls and stop allowing themselves to fall prey to this nonsense. There are decentralized P2P platforms that use free and open source software that we should all use. Lemmy and Mastodon are two that come to mind where we can freely promote our game, a lot of adult game developers make their money from donations, with services like SubscribeStar».
  • «Let them be ruined. He preferred games that focused on their content rather than kowtowing to these bureaucrats who have no interest in the industry and rather want everyone subjected to their delusional cult.».
  • «It’s pretty hard for the people who basically control the credit industry to go bankrupt, and if you really look into who owns MasterCard and Visa, it’s not them who are woke, it’s them who look at them and think they’re woke for tolerating degenerate pornography».
  • «Screw the credit card companies. The way things are going, next week DLsite will announce that they will no longer distribute adult content».
  • «Japanese credit card companies should start taking advantage of this opportunity to gain many new customers in the West».
  • «It’s as if DLsite wants minors to explore their site. It’s a joke? It’s a fucking hentai doujinshi site!».
