Shameik Moorethe main voice actor in “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse“, called himself a “sore loser” following the film’s loss in the Best Animated Feature category at the Academy Awards. The animated sequel, which was nominated along with other notable productions such as “Elementary“, “Nimona“, “Robot Dreams” and the winner “The Boy and the Heron” of Studio Ghiblifailed to take home the award at the 2024 Oscars ceremony, held this weekend.
The 28-year-old actor expressed his disappointment via Twitter, writing, “Robbed“, in apparent reference to the non-awarding of the award to his film. Moore, who voices the character Miles Morales in the film, followed up with a subsequent post in which he showed respect to the winners. He acknowledged his status as a “sore loser” but emphasized the positive impact that “Spider-Verse” has had on many lives.
But of course, his whining did not go unnoticed on the comment forums in Japan:
- «I only understood that he feels frustrated for having lost».
- «The younger generation is pathetic, I understand Miyazaki-sensei more now».
- «I honestly feel disappointed. But I guess you can’t respond to him the way you should because of his skin color.».
- «If he were a white person, he would have praised Miyazaki-sensei for winning and made chivalrous comments, but it’s a shame that because he is black he can get away with it».
- «Well, I guess in his head he doesn’t understand deep plots with dramas and psychological themes.».
- «People of color better not make these kinds of comments, because they are racist towards Asians.».
- «I assume he means that he feels the decision was not made fairly.».
- «I guess he thought he was assured of victory just because it was a movie about America’s most popular superhero. It makes me feel sad that he thinks that popularity guarantees him awards».
- «If in the end he was going to write a sincere congratulatory message, why the hell did he post the first one? Don’t these people think about their actions?».
- «I guess it makes sense if the director had said it, but what the hell does a voice actor have to say?».
- «I really like the main character of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, but his voice actor is another story».
- «I have seen many fans say that “the award was stolen from them.” But telling a lie so many times won’t make it true.».
- «Even if Hayao Miyazaki-sensei hadn’t been nominated, Spider-Man wouldn’t have won anyway».
