Cosplayer furious because her fans resell her gifts

At the end of last year, the popular Japanese cosplayer “Enako (えなこ)” posted an update on Twitter stating that he would never give away personal items to his followers again. Enako cited a post on Twitter revealing that some personal items, such as clothing, which she had given away at a special birthday event in early 2023, were selling on Mercari for 57,000 yen (about $375).

Enako simply shared the post and wrote: “I will never give you something personal again in my life.», accompanied by a smiling face. The popular cosplayer added: «Even if the person really needs the money, they could have sold the things for their material value, not their sentimental value. Now, the conditions explicitly prohibit the resale of auctioned products, so I can’t forgive this kind of thing.».

This peculiar situation attracted comments from Internet users in Japan, who were quick to criticize the very existence of resellers and to report the publication. Eventually, Mercari ended up removing the product and Enako thanked his followers for their support:

  • «Thanks to all of you, the product was removed from the sales list! Thank you. It’s sad for me that fans who really support me lose because of a few people, so… I’m planning another new project for next month’s birthday event! Please look forward to it».

And of course, the comments didn’t take long to arrive:

  • «As in any field, resellers are a pest that must be eradicated».
  • «This type of scourge exists everywhere. What kind of person resells a product even if he is told he can’t do it?».
  • «Are even resellers going to get involved in private events?».
  • «This will definitely make Enako-chan very upset. She kindly gives away some personal things and her fans sell them».
  • «The problem is also on the part of the platforms that allow this type of product sales without bothering to include a moderation system.».
  • «I think it’s time to get people engaged. Resellers aren’t going away until we do something about it».
  • «Resellers are still a threat. The fans are right».
  • «I’m so angry now that I realized I possibly didn’t get a ticket to the birthday event because a scalper crashed the event.».
  • «When these types of people exist, there is no choice but to start limiting opportunities equally. A shame for those of us who are true Enako fans».
