Twitch has released significant updates to its sexual content policy and content rating system. These modifications now allow previously prohibited content, such as nipple illustrations and “erotic dances.” Additionally, guidelines on what type of nudity is allowed on the platform have been detailed. The update comes in response to the controversial “shirtless goal” after the streamer and OnlyFans model, Morgpiewent viral for appearing naked in her recent broadcasts.
Morgpie, known for her “topless” streams that showed off her shoulders, upper chest and cleavage, sparked controversy and criticism from other, mostly male, streamers, who urged Twitch to crack down on the apparent nudity. She was banned on December 11, two days before Twitch’s content guidelines were revised.
The new policy, although meticulously detailed, presents notable contradictions. For example, drawn or animated breasts and genitals are acceptable in certain contexts, but augmented reality avatars must follow the same clothing guidelines as regular streamers. Actual female nipples should be covered, while the cleavage remains “unrestricted.” The policy regarding “sideboob” remains unclear.
In response to previous criticism and confusion, Twitch says it has been reviewing its content moderation over the past year, and these updates aim to provide clarity and reduce inconsistency in policy enforcement.
These updates have generated mixed reactions among Twitch users. Some applaud the greater freedom for creators, while others lament that the platform now allows women to get views by showing off their bodies, rather than encouraging more productive content.
The change, according to Twitch, is intended to prevent viewers from viewing non-consensual content, but users are expressing concern about the direction the platform is taking and the perception that it is allowing practices that could be considered exploitative:
