This article includes spoilers for “Jujutsu Kaisen.” Reader discretion is advised.
The popular anime Jujutsu Kaisen has aired its most recent episode, and Malaysian fans (and Singapore) have noticed the mention of a familiar place in the region: Kuantanthe capital of the state of Pahang on the east coast of Malaysia. The reference came from one of the series’ most beloved characters, which came as no surprise that Kuantan became a trending topic on the platform formerly known as Twitter.
The mention even led to the creation of a marker on Google Maps (At least for the moment) related to the reference. With spoiler warning, it should come as no surprise that the mention involves the death of an important character. Kento Nanami, a beloved Jujutsu Kaisen character, whose touching and bittersweet farewell showed him dreaming of Kuantan Beach in Malaysia. His tragic end occurred at the hands of the villain Mahito, one of the main antagonists of the series, with the ability to remodel souls and create transfigured humans or explode their bodies from the inside.
Before his death, Nanami was already exhausted after an attack that left him severely injured. Spend the last of your energy cutting through a horde of transfigured humans. In an emotional scene, she walks down a hallway imagining herself in the sand of a beach, with the breeze in her hair. His last words reveal his desire to build a house on an empty beach in Kuantan, expressing his exhaustion and feeling of having done enough.
Nanami’s death marks the first major departure of a main character in the series, as he served as a secondary mentor to the main trio of students: Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro, and Nobara Kugisaki. Although older fans might have anticipated his fate since they had already read the manga, it didn’t stop the community from expressing their emotions on Twitter.
In response to the emotional farewell, fans shared photos of the actual beach, reposted clips from the scene, and praised the farewell as one of the best in anime. Some felt that Nanami deserved the peace and happiness she sought. One follower even created a “Kento Nanami Memorial (Kento Nanami Memorial Shrine)” on Google Maps, receiving five-star reviews, with fans saying their goodbyes in the comments.
