This article includes spoilers and screenshots from the final episode of Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan). Viewer discretion is advised.
After more than a decade since the first season was broadcast by WIT Studiothe anime adaptation of Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) has reached its conclusion with the broadcast of today’s special. After a variety of divisions of the fourth season that became meme, the last part produced by the studios finally ends MAPPA.
A large number of leaks appeared prior to the episode’s broadcast, and the usual theory that the ending would be changed for the final episode did not take long to emerge. (something you probably saw as a trend on social networks like #AOEwhich were the acronym for #AnimeOriginalEnding). Two key scenes that many expected to be changed included the part where Eren is beaten by Armin and the former cries thinking that Mikasa Ackerman will be taken by another man, and the scene where Mikasa’s scarf is lifted by a pigeon (supposedly representing Eren).
And it was clear that this was not going to happen, the adaptation was completely faithful to the original content in regards to the narrative (with a scene added at the end, not entirely relevant), so fans had no choice but to eat their words and enjoy the 85-minute episode. Unfortunately, Crunchyroll made the smart decision to air this special nine hours after it aired in Japanwhich encourages fans to opt for “less legal” options to watch the stream.
After all, who would want to wait nine hours to watch the episode while everyone else who already watched it through piracy is commenting on the episode and giving spoilers on social media? It is certainly a regrettable decision on Crunchyroll’s part, considering that it is quite likely that they already had the episode (or much of it) available for days for subtitling.
Anyway, why don’t we move on to review the community comments?
- «My expectations for the finale were low, but they lied to me about everything, this is something that will transcend generations».
- «I’m crying so hard, I’m not kidding at all».
- «I’m speechless, thank you very much for everything Isayama, goodbye Shingeki no Kyojin, it was a long journey!».
- «I’m crying, the way Eren was cut. Finally, goodbye to Shingeki no Kyojin. Isayama is probably laughing at everyone right now».
- «Eren’s voice when he breaks seems ridiculous to me, I couldn’t help but laugh completely».
- «I can’t believe the scene of Eren crying, I’m sure it’s just an AI doing the voice and a fan made animation».
- «And by showing Eren crying and asking Mikasa to cry for him for a hundred years, they finally throw away all the development he had to date».
- «It was time for Shingeki no Kyojin to end. And I don’t say this with boredom, but with satisfaction. Good time to fully enjoy it and say goodbye in a big way».
- «What is the problem with MAPPA that they always start reworking the most popular panels? If there was nothing wrong with the original panel, don’t fix it!».
- «Depression and existential emptiness come after finishing an anime».
- «An ending that was too godly to be understood by most, Neon Genesis Evangelion also took many years for its different endings to appeal to everyone.».
- «I thought that the day I saw the end would be really screwed, but it turned out the other way around. I’m not even going to witness such an act of animated terrorism, just clips and some reactions to have a laugh.».
- «God, this series marked my entire adolescence, I lived every epic moment of the anime in an unimaginable way».
- «Back in 2013, I promised a friend, as far away from anime as possible, that I would watch a series that she had loved. Season after season, he kept insisting on the same thing. Today the series ended and I just want to say: Eli, I’m sorry, I lied to you, I didn’t take the time.».
- «This story taught me a great lesson, always plan carefully the end of something».
