This week, the official Twitter account of McDonald’s Japan It became a trend after sharing a twenty-second commercial showing a family consisting of a father, a mother and their daughter, eating McDonald’s food in their home. The video went immensely viral, accumulating more than 30 million views in just one day.
Since the commercial shows a traditional family, Netizens began to speculate that this is pro-birth propaganda that continues the efforts of the late former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, against the country’s declining birth rate..
Unfortunately, while the commercial was well received in Japan, It seems to have attracted mixed criticism in the West, especially from the LGBT+ community, who criticized the fact that the commercial shows a heterosexual family. (i.e. they expected representation in this commercial). Thousands of comments have emerged so far, with the majority in favor of what is depicted in the short commercial:
