The iconic Japanese animation director, Hayao Miyazaki, continues to defy expectations and surprise the world of cinema at 82 years of age. Even though it was believed that her last film, “Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru ka (The Boy and the Heron)”, would be his farewell, new statements from a prominent member of the Studio Ghibli team have changed the situation completely.
Miyazaki, known for his influential work in the animation industry, has faced the challenge of age, as making anime films is hard and demanding work. His most recent film, “The Boy and the Heron,” remained in production for the better part of a decade, leading many to believe that this would be his final work.
However, in an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation during the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival, where “The Boy and the Heron” was the opening movie, Junichi Nishiokahead of public relations Studio Ghibli, revealed exciting news. Journalist Eli Glasner quoted Nishioka in a tweet stating: “The Boy and the Heron is not Miyazaki’s last film and he is already returning to the office with new ideas“.
This announcement has generated a stir in the film community and animation lovers. Although Miyazaki has delegated some of the animation to other artists while he concentrates on directing the story and coming up with new ideas, the possibility that the 82-year-old veteran director could direct another full film has not been ruled out. Although it is more likely that he will direct another short film for Ghibli Park and the Ghibli Museum, as he did with “Boro the Caterpillar“.
Meanwhile, Miyazaki’s most recent film, “The Boy and the Heron,” premiered in Japan on July 14. GKIDS announced the same day that it acquired distribution rights in the United States, with a planned theatrical release on December 8, 2023. A date for Latin American theaters has yet to be announced, but fans around the world are eagerly awaiting the next masterpieces from this legendary director.
