Macross is a Japanese franchise created by Studio New and artland in 1982. The franchise features a fictional history of Earth and the human race after the year 1999, as well as the history of humanoid civilization in the Milky Way. Within the series, the term Macross used to designate the main capital ship. This theme started in the original Macross, the SDF-1 Macross. Robotechnology refers to scientific advances discovered on an alien starship ASS-1 (Alien Star Ship – One, later renamed Super Dimension Fortress – One Macross) which crashed on the island of South Ataria. Humans were able to reverse-engineer the technology to create the mechas (variable fighters and destroyers), the faster-than-light space-folding engine for starships, and other advanced technology featured in the series.
Several sequels and a prequel followed. Most use a timeline created by the creators of Studio New, and those that followed their own timelines were deemed “side stories” by the studio. Several different studies were involved with Studio New in the franchise Macross over the years, but since Macross Zero of 2002, production has been managed exclusively between Studio New and satellitelightof which Shouji Kawamori is one of the main key members.
Synopsis of Macross
After a mysterious spaceship crashes to Earth, humanity realizes that it is not alone. Fearing a potential threat from space, the world puts aside its nationalisms, competing interests and cultural differences, uniting under the banner of the United Nations. The newly formed UN forces decide to reuse the alien ship, naming it the SDF-1 Macross. Unfortunately, on the day of its maiden voyage, a fleet of spaceships belonging to a race of aliens known as the Zentradi descend on Earth, and the SDF-1 Macross, acting on its own initiative, shoots down the incoming squadron, sparking an intergalactic war. .
In an attempt to escape, the Macross tries to launch into orbit of the Moon, but the ship – as well as the city it was in – is teleported to the far reaches of space. Into this mess are Hikaru Ichijou, a free-spirited stunt pilot, and Minmay Lynn, an aspiring singer. Together with the Macross crew, they will experience an epic journey filled with pain and drama, coming face to face with the cruelties of war.
