The theme of the illustrations made with Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to be on everyone’s lips, now that the suspension of the monetization of this type of content has been announced on the four main sites in Japan, it seems that the now called “AI Artists” are preparing the counterattack.
A screenshot was shared on a popular comment forum in Japan. showing that these “AI Artists” want to manipulate real artists into taking the situation to court. Considering the background and the non-existence of AI legislation, these users are sure that the government of Japan will end up issuing a law that favors them.
In the screenshot shown we can read the following conversation: «I think at some point, artists who don’t do AI artwork will file a class action lawsuit while collecting donations through a campaign.»; «I can see it, they’re about to take the case to court»; «It would set a precedent and it would be to their advantage if they get a poorly qualified jury. After all, what would be the reason for the lawsuit? Sadness of the artists of flesh and blood?»; and “It would be a small claims trial where the opposition of the AIs will meet, and when the issue of doujinshi is brought up, this can be won without the need for a lawyer».
The latter is the comment that resonated the most with Japanese netizens. And it is that if one stops to think, what is the difference between an illustration made with AI and a doujinshi? Aren’t both corresponding to copyright infringement? If a grand jury were to determine that both processes are equivalent, then AI would win, since in Japan it is not a crime to produce and monetize so-called “derivative works”, which include doujinshi.
And what do Japanese netizens think about it? Let’s review the comments:
- «Could it be that we will finally see the judgment that pits AI artists against flesh and blood artists?».
- «I, on the other hand, was baffled that they could only think so much of themselves».
- «If I’m not mistaken, you got kicked off DLsite because most of your content was about lolis and it was uncensored, do you really think you can win in court?».
- «It’s the same mentality that scalpers have, rubbish».
- «I don’t understand, why do people who use AIs call themselves “artists”?».
- «First of all, being an artist or not is something for the viewer to decide, you can’t call yourself an “artist” just because you want to.».
- «AI artists are already the same as resellers».
- «Hmm, so it’s the same hole as the doujinshi? I mean, if AI artists can’t monetize their works because they supposedly infringe copyright, wouldn’t they ban doujinshi in court? After all the definition is the same».
- «Doujinshi and AIs are gray ground in Copyright Law, if the case goes to court, the AIs are going to win it».
- «I think things won’t be as convenient as they think».
- «It did hurt to be banned from major image sites».
