An anime is in big trouble this season

The Spring-2024 season (April-June) has begun with big surprises, but in a bad way. Leaks of the first episodes of the most anticipated premieres of the season due to the oversights of Crunchyroll (whether because the leaks come from the servers or from a special event, both are platform errors) and now we even have a director predicting that his next production will be a failure.

Is about Tsutomu Mizushimadirector of the new original anime “Train to the End of the World (Shuumatsu Train Doko and Iku?)” produced by the studios EMT Squared and released this week. The story is described as follows:

  • A certain town on the outskirts. This was no ordinary country town. The residents were experiencing a strange phenomenon. But even so, Shizuru Chikura felt a strong desire. She wanted to see her missing friends again. Shizuru and her friends venture into the outside world, taking an abandoned and motionless train, not knowing if they will make it back alive. What awaits you at the last stop of this doomsday train in motion?

Celebrating 150 years of Japan’s railways, with both director Tsutomu Mizushima as with the composer of the series Michiko Yokote from “Shirobako” and “The Magnificent Kotobuki” (another original series), a show about a group of girls traveling on a train to nowhere, really gives off the vibes of “Gakkougurashi“.

Although initial impressions have been positive, it was director Tsutomu Mizushima who threw the bucket of cold water on Twitter, revealing that they haven’t even finished the fourth episode yet. While it is normal within the anime industry for episodes to be finished a few hours (or sometimes even minutes) before they air on television, generally the only thing missing are small production details.

However, the words used by the director in question have caused Japanese netizens to infer that it is not “small details” that are missing.:

  • «The fourth episode is not ready yet. Is it okay for me to post on Twitter about this? Don’t know. Please continue to support us over the next three months, even if it seems like a short time.», he wrote on Twitter

And of course, there was no shortage of comments:

  • «This is a normal thing, isn’t it?».
  • «No, it’s definitely not something that’s okay.».
  • «Hmm, this seems more like a death flag for this anime».
  • «I’ve heard that a lot of productions are being delivered early lately, so it seems strange to me. Although it is definitely a worrying situation».
  • «I think I remember seeing something about this in SHIROBAKO, so I don’t think there’s a problem or anything like that.».
  • «After all, it’s not like EMT Squared is anything different».
  • «I can see many options available, and they are all negative».
  • «Are you giving up now?».
  • «Is it bad not to have until the fourth episode ready when the first one has already aired? I don’t understand much about this industry, sometimes something is good but other times it is bad».
  • «I’m tired of this situation, and this is when the compilations appear».
