How would you feel if your favorite idol suddenly announced that he had started a romantic relationship? A Japanese company has revealed the results of a survey in which they asked readers if they would be okay with their favorite idols falling in love with someone else, and a surprising 70 percent of respondents said they would have no problem.
The survey was conducted through an online platform known as “Surfvote“, a web service operated and developed by Polimill Co., Ltd. (Polimill株式会社)between May and July 2023, and valid responses were received from 61 users with accounts in the service.
When asked for their opinion on the question of whether idols should be allowed to fall in love, The most common response was “The idea of a ban on love in the first place is not good“, with 36.1%. Next, 31.1% responded: “It’s okay for idols to fall in love even if they have declared the prohibition of love“which shows that two out of three respondents have a positive opinion about idols falling in love.
Respondents responded: “Idols are human beings. Everyone has the right to fall in love” and “It is a tacit understanding of the public that idols are prohibited from falling in love… that idea in itself is already power harassment and sexual harassment“.
On the other hand, 19.7% of those surveyed chose “As long as they publicly declare that they are not allowed to be in love, they shouldn’t be.“, and others stated that “As long as they’ve made ‘not love’ their ‘sales pitch’, they should act accordingly.“. Respondents also stated that “It would be good if they themselves declared it and obtained benefits from it, but their actual behavior is not in line with it, which is a good example of inconsistency.“.
Another respondent who answered “none of the above” (11.5%) said: “I think it’s okay to be in love, but since they announce that they are not allowed to do so, they have to refrain from those activities“.
